Expert Self-Help Tips for Flight Anxiety
- Get to Know the Process:
Visit an airport terminal before your travel date. Watch planes take off and observe how calm fellow passengers are. This will help you normalise the environment. - Inform the Airline Staff:
Let check-in and cabin crew know you are an anxious flyer. Airline staff are trained to provide support. - Book Ahead & Arrive Early:
Select your seat online in advance to avoid last-minute stress, and give yourself plenty of time to clear security comfortably.
- Manage Physical Symptoms:
Stay hydrated with non-alcoholic drinks, stretch during the flight, and practice deep-breathing exercises. - Focus on the Outcome:
Keep your mind focused on your destination—whether it’s a sunny beach, seeing family, or succeeding in a business meeting.
Therapist Note: Self-help strategies are a brilliant starting point, but if anxiety continues to hold you back, professional CBT can provide a permanent solution. The longer you wait, the more memories and opportunities you miss out on.
